What are the factors that lead to the cold crack of weathering steel welding

August 31, 2023

The main factors causing cold cracks in welding of weather-resistant steel plates include three aspects:

1. Hardening tendency of steel: 2. Welding tensile stress: 3. Hydrogen content and distribution of welded joints.

In response to the above three factors, the main measures can be taken:

Weathering steel cutting parts

Weathering steel cutting parts

(1) Use alkaline low hydrogen electrodes and flux. Alkaline low hydrogen electrodes and flux welded joints have low hydrogen content, good desulfurization and dephosphorization properties, weathering resistance to steel manufacturers, and high impact toughness. Before use, it should be dried at 350420C for 1-2 hours. The aim is to effectively remove the water in it, thereby reducing the oxygen content of the welded joint and reducing the cold trend of the joint.

(2) Welding spare parts must be inspected before pairing. Weathering steel should not be forced to pair, so as to avoid excessive assembly stress.

(3) The steel parts to be welded should be carefully cleaned, and the distance between each steel part should not exceed 20 mm to remove debris, such as moisture, rust and oil stains.

(4) Reasonable arrangement of welding weathering steel sequence. The principle is to try to make most welds weldable under low stiffness conditions, thereby further reducing welding stress.
